AI Can Generate a Million Leads. Which Ones Would You Actually Call?

Let's imagine AI reaches the point where generating B2B prospects becomes almost effortless.

You give a system your ideal customer profile.

It researches companies.

Finds contacts.

Identifies signals.

Writes personalised outreach.

Scores prospects.

Suggests messaging.

And produces thousands of names.

Sounds fantastic.

Until somebody asks a very simple question.

Which of these people actually wants to hear from us?

That question is going to become increasingly important.

Volume Is Getting Cheaper

AI is reducing the cost of many sales and marketing activities.

Research can be automated.

Content can be generated.

Personalisation can happen at enormous scale.

Salesforce reported earlier this year that top-performing Indian sellers are already more likely to use prospecting AI agents, while respondents expect agents to significantly reduce time spent on research and content creation.

McKinsey's latest B2B sales research similarly points toward agentic AI becoming integrated across commercial workflows.

So we should probably assume one thing:

The number of messages reaching B2B buyers is not going down.

That Changes the Meaning of a Lead

If every company can identify the same decision makers and generate personalised outreach to them, possessing a contact record is not particularly valuable.

The value shifts toward understanding the contact.

Did they engage?

What did they engage with?

Why might it matter to them?

Are they actually relevant to the campaign?

What signals suggest genuine interest?

Has the information been validated?

That is a very different definition of lead generation.

And we think it is where the market needs to go.

Personalisation Is Not the Same as Relevance

This distinction is going to matter enormously.

AI can write:

"Hi Sarah, I noticed that your company recently expanded into Germany..."

That is personalised.

But Sarah may have absolutely no interest in whatever comes next.

Her name is correct.

Her company is correct.

The message may reference recent company news.

The email can still be completely irrelevant.

True relevance requires understanding context and intent.

And that is harder.

We Should Be Making Leads Harder to Earn, Not Easier

That might sound strange coming from a demand generation company.

But the future cannot simply be about putting more names into a spreadsheet.

There is already enough noise in B2B.

If AI makes prospect generation dramatically easier, quality standards should become higher.

Not lower.

At Pineapple View Media, this is one of the areas we think about when looking at how AI fits into demand generation.

AI can strengthen research, targeting, validation, analysis and campaign processes.

But we do not believe the goal should be removing the human element from the equation completely.

The goal should be increasing confidence.

Confidence that the company fits.

Confidence that the person is relevant.

Confidence that the engagement happened.

Confidence that the data is accurate.

And, where the campaign requires it, confidence that there is genuine interest behind the lead.

Maybe the Future KPI Is Confidence

Marketing has spent years measuring quantity.

Impressions.

Clicks.

Downloads.

MQLs.

Leads.

AI will make quantity even easier to produce.

That means the differentiator may move somewhere else.

Toward confidence.

A database of 10,000 contacts may look impressive.

One hundred people who genuinely understand what you offer and have demonstrated relevant interest may be considerably more valuable.

Technology will continue getting better at finding people.

The bigger opportunity is using technology to understand which people actually matter.

And that could be one of the most important shifts AI brings to B2B demand generation.
