Your Next B2B Prospect Might Never Visit Your Website

For years, digital marketing had a fairly understandable journey.

Search.

Click.

Website.

Content.

Form.

Lead.

It was never quite that simple, but at least marketers could see parts of the journey.

AI is beginning to break that model.

A buyer can now ask an AI platform a detailed question, receive a comparison of several companies, understand their products and even get recommendations without visiting most of those companies' websites.

That means something uncomfortable for marketers:

A prospect can be influenced by your business without ever appearing in your analytics.

Recent discussion around AI search measurement reflects exactly this issue. Search Engine Land noted this month that SEO, PR, publishers and analyst relations are increasingly confronting the same problem: website traffic alone can no longer explain marketing influence.

We Have Spent Years Optimising for the Click

Traffic.

CTR.

Landing-page visits.

Conversion rate.

Form fills.

All useful metrics.

But what happens when the research happens somewhere else?

Imagine a CIO researching cybersecurity providers.

They may ask ChatGPT for the market landscape.

Ask another AI tool to compare five vendors.

Read a LinkedIn discussion.

Watch a two-minute video from an industry expert.

Then directly search for two companies.

Company number three may have influenced the entire process without receiving a single website visit.

Traditional analytics sees almost nothing.

The buyer experienced quite a lot.

Welcome to the Invisible Buyer Journey

This is one reason B2B marketing measurement is going to become more complicated.

The journey may involve:

AI answers

LinkedIn posts

Publisher content

Industry conversations

Podcasts

Analyst coverage

Peer recommendations

Vendor content

Sales conversations

And only a fraction of those interactions will produce a convenient attribution trail.

We may have to become more comfortable with something marketers generally dislike:

Not being able to attribute everything perfectly.

Being Found Is Not Enough

There is also a bigger question.

When someone asks AI about your category, are you part of the answer?

AI visibility is quickly becoming a marketing discipline of its own.

This week, for example, Pepper announced tools designed to help CMOs monitor how their brands appear across AI search platforms such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.

A year or two ago, most marketing conversations were about Google rankings.

Now companies are beginning to ask:

Does ChatGPT know us?

How does it describe us?

Does it recommend our competitors?

Which sources influence the answer?

That is a major change.

What Does This Mean for B2B Content?

It means content probably has to become more useful.

Not longer.

Not more frequent.

Useful.

Clear explanations.

Original research.

Strong opinions.

Customer evidence.

Expert perspectives.

Detailed answers to real questions.

Information that other people actually reference.

If your entire content strategy is producing generic articles around keywords, AI can probably generate something similar without ever mentioning your company.

Brands need to contribute something to the conversation that is worth retrieving.

Demand Generation Cannot Only Start at the Form

This is also why we believe demand generation needs to be viewed more broadly.

The form fill is still important.

The lead is still important.

But it is increasingly the visible end of a much longer invisible journey.

The businesses that understand that will stop asking only:

"How many people clicked?"

And begin asking:

"How many buying decisions are we influencing?"

The second question is considerably harder to answer.

It is also becoming the more important one.
